THE MANGA REVOLUTION

Where did I find this? ... I seem to have forgotten. I was just searching the internet for naruto front covers. This is a poster advertising the Tokyopop's website. For those who don't know Tokyopop is a really big American manga translator. I immediately saw it and thought: "Wow, is that not russian constructivism, wood block influenced or what!"... It's the bold primary colours; red, yellow and black; industrial themes- It even has the stars embedded into the title borders (communism!!!).
Tokyopop is really quite a good manga translator, I suggest checking it out some time.

THOSE CRAZY JAPANESE. shonen gangan.

Talk about colour harmony gone wrong.

This is an "editorial" (article) page about some game, but it comes from the famous shonen GanGan (the first post I did was about gangan). I actually scanned this page in from my gangan that I have (authentic Japanese!). I seems to use a primary colour co-ordination to crate a strong clash or "discord". Artwork wise I think is really good, exspecially how smooth the art work is next to the very geometric shapes of the text boxes. The way they have used shapes and colour (and overlapping) to create a sense of action while maintaining some clarity with it's strong grid system. I think is fascinating.

P.S. the Word gangan comes from the japanese sound effect for a quick/fast action.

HEAD CASE? HEADSPACE!

This is the brochure for head space that, believe it or not, I found at the "HS" head quarters! The two images to the left are actually printed on one piece of card. As a brochure it's not only suppose to advertise it's self but also inform about its services. on the second page is a strong grid organization of the information- it's easy to read and informative....
I really like the photography on the first image, that diffused colour against the really vibrant hue (green in this case). I like the casual font that says: "what's in your headspace?". Nice bubble writing.

poster art in hyper magazine

This is an article cover in HYPER (an Australian gaming magazine). It was made to attract attention for the article, which I think it does really well, because it uses that "less is more" idea behind it.
I scanned this image because it strongly reminds me of early modern design in it's diagonal axis solid design.
THE typography is a very casual one and it goes really well the bold illustrations (I'm sure the alien in the center is of Space invaders!).....

samurai champloo T-shirt tag

I found this tag connected to that samurai champloo T-shirt I sometimes wear....and as you can see I got it from the wonderful (most of the time) MADMAN otaku wear...
the GENEON logo is the anime publishers. I thought it looked cool so I kept it.
IT'S FUNCTION is to... err.. conect to the tag? I'm not sure, I think it's probally there as a form of branding.
THE DESIGN has a chaotic feel about it, which is what attracted my attention about this peice. The illustration line work is done in rough pencil and the font is almost a grunge font. The images weight is all in the lower right-hand corner. There's a strong weight contrast.

resident evil limited edition pack

Here I sit, resident evil depraved and I needing my fix. Looking make want more... persons Resident evil is addictive and it's damn hard to stop..... quit before you start.

What you see before you is a Special edition resident evil pack... and no It wasn't the fact it was resident evil that attracted me(well, not entirely), it was the colour co-ordination, I mean look at that black and gold!!! The black and the gold contrast really well infact when I see the colour combination I think rich like the heavy richness of dark forrest cake.

capcom title

This is the logo for the world renown Capcom game company. Capcom is famous for producing such titles a Street fighter and resident evil, and we shouldn't forget the mega man series (which means I see this logo alot). The logo uses 2 primary colours, yellow and blue (much like the pokemon logo...). It is uses bold font and assymetric balance to atract extra attention and to make it more interesting. I think it was the colours which attracted me Blue and yellow really compliment each other, that and the capcom logo's relation to the Resident evil series (YAY!) .

I think Cathederal...

This is an advert for a Castlevania game published in Anime insider(an American anime and manga magazine). That's Castlevania: judgement to be accurate.
This advert was designed to show people about the new castlevania game that Konami has produced. Being a massive anime fan the art is immediately recognisable as Takeshi Obata; the manga artist responsible for the renown DEATH NOTE. It's style is much like death note the sort of grand Gothic/realistic feel. When I look at it it has this, almost awe inspiring feel, like being in a cathedral.
The fact that the characters are coming down a slant as well as the worms eye view shot help to strengthen this feel. The detail helps to over whelm the viewer much like the detail in some french Cathedrals.
When I first saw this picture Obata was the first thing that came to my mind (I only really bought the issue of Anime insider because of the ad). Obata's works is amazing, Exspecially the detail of his work which he, as a manga artist is able to maintain.WOW... I want to be able to draw like this guy,Hrrmmm... maybe one day.

White Knight

If you were to pick up PSW, issue 115 and flick to page 062 you would find a preview for an upcoming game White Knight Chronicles. It's not the the game that iterests me most about the image you see down below but the layout.

The article is there to tell us 10 reasons we should get excited about white knight chronicles. The introduction paragraph has plain average borders and then the next 10 points are all assisted with a picture related to each of them. A layering effect is used to put importance for each of the layers (the most important first): 4, first the number; then the TEXT, with a header to atract attention to each of the texts; and finally the IMAGE, to variate the images they some times make the focus in the image break from it's circular border. The green used in page header and numbering creates a unity along side the black with white backround (white being a very clean colour) . I like this design because aside from lookin clean and also very nice, it's EFFICIENT [in providing information].

Monthly Shonen Gangan

Wow. Cool hazard feel. This, by the way, is an image of a front cover of a japanese comic magazine,is about the thickness of a phone book and from its name "monthly shounen Gangan" comes out once a month....yay for manga!!! The strong yellow(warning) and black contrast has a really strong effect-much like that of those police investigation bands they have in movies. The crammed words placed around the page give a sense of claustraphobia or panicing. The way the whole image is broken up by the crossing police investigation bands are interesting, maybe almost dynamic but most certainly adds to that whole Panic sense....
